Parades

Larry Gerstenhaber

In my mind's eye I see
Parades of stick children
Walking slowly in dark water,
And Nazi beasts,
That came from deep inside
My parents pain,
To devour my childhood.

The sea was red
With blood, and
Failed, this time,
To part for us.
Noah himself did not
Come to save me.

We wondered about that,
Put the blame on ourselves,
Not good enough, we said,
Sinners, said some,
God's punishment in the
hands of great beasts;
Or had God, in his
Whatever wisdom, gone to sleep.

I don't need explanations,
A warm blanket will do,
And perhaps a small piece of chicken,
And, oh yes, my childhood please.
